Notes for the book of

Genesis

Study notes from 2016

Chapter 1
1-2, God creates Time, Space, and Matter all in one verse. The second verse shows how the Earth was before God started adding to it.
6-8, The firmament here is heaven, from Hebrew, and refers to the sky and space and basically everything over our heads. This firmament divided water, above and below it. This would imply that there was originally water in the atmosphere and it came down during the flood, easily explains 40 days’ worth of rain.
9-10, God creates oceans by gathering the water together which then revealed the dry land.
11-13, God created all plants that would reproduce after their kinds. Something to needs to be noticed is that God never refers to plants as life. Old Earth Creationists try to use plants as their reasoning for death before sin.
14-19, God created the Sun, Moon, and Stars. He set them in the heaven, referring to Space. They are meant to light the Earth and to allow us to tell time. Atheists believe this a fallacy because the Moon isn’t the actual source of its light but it does exactly what God intended.
20-22, God creates sea life and then birds that would reproduce after their kinds. “Whale” translated from Hebrew actually refers to sea monsters or huge fish, not literally just whales.
26, God talks about himself as plural here and this is the first show of the Trinity. We know there is only one God so that is the only possibility here. God created us in his image and gave us immortal souls and dominance over the Earth and everything on it.
28, God commands us to be fruitful and multiply. Modern Culture is going more against this command every day.
29-31, God explains that all the living creatures of the Earth would only eat plants. There was no death so there was no eating meat, everything was vegetarian.

Chapter 2
The 1st covenant
1-3, Everything was finished and God rested on the 7th day. God sets the example of the Sabbath here. If you believe in Old Earth this would have lasted millions of years and God is still resting now, which is absolute nonsense. It was one literal 24 hour day.
4-7, God summarizes that Chapter 1 was how it all happened and in that order. The plants were watered through mist that came up from the Earth (the dry land) and did not need tending or rain. He then created man breathing life into us and giving us immortal souls.
8-10, God placed Adam into the Garden of Eden and made everything nice to look at grow there along with all that are good for food. It was a perfect self-justifying paradise. It also had the Tree of Life and Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
11-14, God explains the different rivers that branch out from the river that waters the Garden of Eden.
16-17, God gives Adam freedom to do basically whatever he likes except eat from the Tree of Knowledge. He also warns Adam of the punishment of death if he does.
18-20, God formed every bird and land animal for Adam and had him name them all but were the companion Adam needed.
21-25, God put Adam to sleep, took his rib and made Eve, and Adam called her woman because she came from man. She was made to be his wife and God explains that a man shall leave his family and cleave to his wife and be one flesh. They knew no shame because they had no fear or knowledge of what Evil was. Worth noting that this is also a command that people do not now adhere to.

Chapter 3
The 2nd Covenant
1-8, The Serpent (Satan) convinced Eve that she could become like God, also notice Adam was there as well, the serpent said Gods, not just god like he would if it was only talking to Eve. The next verse Adam is right there ready to eat the fruit. Adam ate regardless of knowing what he was doing was wrong, he was not deceived (1 Timothy 2:13-14). Instantly upon eating the fruit they were suddenly aware they were naked and wished to fix it out of new found fear. God then appeared and they were afraid to face him and hid in the trees. Worth noting that only Satan has promised we could become equal to God.
9-13, God confronts Adam and Eve questioning why they are hiding. Adam answers and says that he was afraid to be seen naked. God  asks if they ate the fruit and Adam not only blames Eve but also blames God for creating her instead of taking the blame himself.
14-15, God curses the Serpent to crawl on its belly and to eat dust forever. He then tells Satan that he will be put under man’s heel, the first prophecy of Jesus.
16-19, Eve’s punishment will be pain in childbirth and to always want control but have to submit to her husband. Adam’s punishment was to work for everything needed until the day he dies. The ground was now cursed and would no longer take care of itself. Thorns and weeds are also now a thing.
20-21, Adam and Eve are clothed by God and Adam names the woman Eve.
22-24, After eating the fruit Adam and Eve knew all there was to know about Good and Evil. God then kicked them out of the Garden to ensure they didn’t also eat the Fruit of Life and become immortal in their fallen state and rob them of their salvation. He then guarded the entrance to make it impossible to get into. God talked about himself as plural again in another reference to the Trinity.

Chapter 4
1-2, Eve conceives two sons from the Lord. Cain and Abel.
3-7, Both Cain and Abel give offerings to God, but only Abel’s is respected because he gave his best to the Lord while Cain just brought some of his harvest of fruit, and not even his best. Even in a time where you could literally talk to God people were indifferent and didn’t give their best. Cain even got angry with God for telling him that his offering wasn’t good enough because God expects us to give him our best. Cain is a good example of what you can expect when talking to fellow “Christians” about what they are doing wrong. People almost always get angry when you convict them of what they do wrong, rarely will you get a nice response for asking someone to change.
8, Cain talks with Abel and when they go into the field kills him out of Jealousy.
9-10, Cain is actually foolish enough to lie to God about his brother Abel. God not shockingly knew already and he only increased his sin. Sin almost always leads to more sin, without repentance.
11-16, Cain is cursed and will never be able to grow anything ever again and he left the presence of the Lord. He thought the punishment was far too harsh and that he couldn’t bear it and said if anyone saw me they would kill me. God protected his life with a promise that anyone that killed him would suffer 7x worse.
17-18, Cain started a family and built a city and named it after his firstborn son.
19-24, These verses show that man is starting to develop more technologically but the important part is 23-24. Lamech kills two people and because of what God did for Cain thinks he will be protected that much more. He skewed God’s justice into his own favor, (not actually protected at all like he brags). Also first person with two wives.
25-26, Seth is conceived and Eve believes he is meant to replace Abel. Seth then has a son and men began to call upon the name of the Lord. These men are the Sons of God, while Cain’s descendants are the Sons of men.

Chapter 5
3-5, Adam was already 130 years old when Seth was born. He ultimately lived for 930 years.
6-8, Seth lived for almost as long as Adam did so we know this wasn’t exclusive to Adam, people in this time lived much longer than us, having kids as healthy adults when we would already be dead or dying after we hit 100 years old.
9-11, Same goes for Emos dying at 905.
12-14, Cainan also lived to be 910 years old.
15-17, Mahalaleel actually died young at 895 years old, just couldn’t make it to 900.

18-20, Jared was the oldest so far at 962.
21-24, Enoch was young when God took him at age 365. For the first 65 years of his life he didn't walk with God but then he started at age 65. He is a good example that you can come to God whenever in your life. God simply took him and did not let him see death, (Hebrews 11:5). In Jude 14 it says Enoch was prophesying the coming of Jesus with his saints.
25-27, Methuselah lived 969 years, son of Cain.

29, The word comfort here can be translated to “repent” along with a few other words like rue, pity, console, or even to avenge. Lamech believed that Noah would comfort them concerning all the work they did here on Earth. I doubt he knew that God was about to destroy all that, only saving Noah and his family.
30-31, Lamech dies at age 777.
32, Noah was already 500 years old when he had Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
