Notes for the book of

Matthew

Study notes from 2019

Chapter 1
1-17, The generations of David's family line all the way to Jesus, because it is one of the prophecies that needed to be fulfilled.
18-25, Mary was found to be pregnant before she was married, so Joseph was going to quietly step away from the marriage. Then an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him who the child was and that Mary was clean and to name the kid Jesus because he was going to save everyone from sin. Joseph then went through with the marriage and did as he was told to do.

Chapter 2
1-3, Jesus is born in Bethlehem while Herod is in power. Some wise men come and asked Herod where the king of the Jews was. This stressed Herod out big time and the rest of Jerusalem with him. The wise men came due to the star.
4-8, Herod then gathered the chief priests and, with them, figured out where Jesus would be born, that being Bethlehem. Herod found out exactly when the star appeared and sent them to Bethlehem to find Christ but also to return to Herod so that he might also worship Christ.
9-12, The wise men then left and followed the star straight to Jesus. They entered the house where Mary was with him. They gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, then they avoided Herod after being warned by God when they returned to their own country.
13-15, An angel then told Joseph to run to Egypt because Herod was going to try and kill Jesus. This was also part of the prophecy for the Messiah that he would be called out of Egypt.
16-18, Herod after he figured out what the wise men did, he had every kid 2 and under murdered in Bethleham because he feared losing his power. This is also part of the prophecy that needed to be fulfilled.
19-23, After Herod died, God told Joseph to go back to Israel but when Joseph found out Herod's son was in power he decided to bring them to Nazareth instead of their original home.

Chapter 3

1-4, Then John the Baptist started preaching in the wilderness telling people to repent, for the kingdom of heaven was coming soon. He was part of the prophecy that someone would preach from the wilderness to pave the way for Christ. He wore camel's hair for a raiment and a leathern girdle, and he ate mainly locusts and honey. He was a very humble man.
5-6, Everyone then went out to him from Judaea and Jerusalem to be baptized and confess their sins.
7-10, Then the Pharisees and Sadducees went to him and he asked them who had warned them to flee from the coming wrath. He then told them to bring fruits worthy of repentance while also telling them that just being a son of Abraham would not be enough. He then told them that those who did not earn fruit would go to hell by talking about trees.
11-12, John then tells them that while he baptizes with water, Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. He then explains that Jesus is so mighty that John couldn't even wear his shoes. He then says again what will happen to the unfruitful but also that the fruitful will be saved, worded as garner and chaff this time.
13-17, Then Jesus came to John who asked Jesus why he needs to be baptized when John actually needed Jesus's baptism instead. Jesus told him that it must be so because it is good to fulfill all righteousness and so John baptized him and when it happened the heavens opened up and God said this is my beloved son while the Holy Spirit came down to Jesus in the form of light and a dove.

Chapter 4

1-2, Jesus went into the desert and fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and only after was he hungry.
3-4,Then Satan appeared and tempted Jesus to turn rocks into bread but Jesus said that it was written that he would be sustained by God.
5-7, Then Satan took him to the temple roof and told him to jump off because it was written that the angels would take care of him. Jesus simply said to never tempt God which was also written.
8-11, Satan then took Jesus to the peak of a mountain and offered him literally the entire world at the price of worshiping Satan. Jesus tells him to go away and that it is written that only God should be worshiped at all and that everyone should serve only God. Then the devil left and angels came to help Jesus.
12-17, After John the Baptist was put in jail, Jesus left Nazereth and went to Capernaum to bring them the gospel and fulfill another prophecy.
18-22, While in Galilee Jesus found Peter and Andrew fishing and called them to follow him which they did instantly, leaving everything behind. James and John then the same after they were called.
23-25, Jesus went around Galilee preaching and healing and became so famous that all the sick were brought to him and he developed a huge group of followers.
